Agrigento is a city situated on the Sicily?s southern coast in Italy. It is the capital of the province of Agrigento. The site is the same as that Akragas - an ancient Greek city and one of the leading cities during the golden age in Ancient Greece. The city covers a large area spanning 244 square kilometres with a population of around 60,000. There are two rivers around the city ? the Hypsas and the Akragas and a natural ridge to the north which provides a certain degree of natural fortification which proved to be a deciding factor when the location for the city was chosen.
Agrigento is one of the major tourist destinations in the region because of the huge archaeological history. Sulphur and potash were mined extensively in the region until the 1970s. These days, Agrigento has become a poor town and as a result suffers from a large organised crime syndicate.
There are a number of sites for tourists to visit around the city most of which are historical buildings including some ruins. The ruins of ancient Akragas covers a large area, a lot of it still unexcavated. The biggest attraction of this area is the Valle deiTermpli or the Valley of Temples. It comprises of an area where seven monuments of Greek temples were constructed during the 5th and 6th centuries before Christ. The most preserved of these temples are two buildings constructed for the goddess Juno Lacinia and Godess Concordia. The other five temples are fragmented due mainly to earthquakes and were subsequently quarried for stone.
Various other sites of Hellenistic and Roman origin can be visited around the city. One of the more popular of these is a cave sanctuary near the Temple of Demeter over which the Church of San Biagio was constructed. Just outside this area you?ll find the Tomb of Theron, built in the first century.
