Alba is a city and commune of Piedmont in the province of Cuneo in Italy. Most famous for its peach, white truffle and wine production, the town is considered the capital of Langhe. The famous Ferrero confectionary group is also based in the city. It covers an area of just 54 square kilometers and has a population of around 36 thousand people. Alba is built on the site of Alba Pompeia, an ancient site most likely founded by the Romans ? birthplace of Publius Helvius Pertinax who was a Roman emperor. The Roman styled Alba Cathedral of San Lorenzo was built in the 1100s and is assumed that it stands over holy edifices of Roman Age. In the 15th century, Bishop Andrea Novelli restructured it as did several others after him. The Alba Cathedral as it stands today is restored from the 19th century and consists of three portals and a crypt. Visitors also enjoy the wood carved chorus housed in the Cathedral. Other churches of interest are the Gothic Church of San Domenico and the Baroque Church of St John the Baptist which houses the famous Madonna with Saints by Macrinod?Alba.
