Antibes is a beautiful resort town situated in the Alps in the south east of France. It lies right on the waters of the Mediterranean in the Cote d?Azur, located between the cities of Nice and Cannes. It occupies around 27 square kilometers of land and has a population of just shy of 77,000 people. Antibes was founded by the Greeks in the 5th century. The town has a temperate climate with mostly warm weather and most of the rain falling in the winter months. The closest airport is that of Nice, the Nice Cote d?Azur Airport and getting to the town can be done via road or the rail link to the local train station, the Gate d?Antibes.
Perhaps the most visited tourist attraction in the city of Antibes is the Chateau Grimaldi. It was constructed in the 12th century to be used as a residence for Monaco?s ruling family. Today it stands almost exactly as it did when it was first built and is a popular tourist destination as well as housing the Picasso Museum, an attraction in its own right.
Another not to be missed attraction on the city of Antibes is the Fort Carre. The colossal castle dominates the skyline of the city. It was built during the 16th century on the outskirts of the city and later, during the 17th century was redeveloped by Vauban. In actual fact, the castle started as a tower called la tour Saint-Florent and was built around a chapel that stood at its base. Henry the Third added to this tower in 1565 at which point it became the fort it is today. Over the next 100 years, more fortifications were added to it. There are many other buildings that have been well preserved in the area including some very beautiful cathedrals and chateaus.
Although the city of Antibes is very pedestrian friendly, driving around in a car is always far more efficient and with so much to see, you won?t want to walk around. www.anycarhire.com provides a platform where you can instantly find competitive quotes from the various companies providing car hire in Antibes as well as pre-book a car rental so that you can be assured it will be ready and waiting for you upon your arrival.
