In the central area of Italy is Arezzo, the capital of Tuscany. This picturesque town is located at the junction of four valleys: Val Tiberna, Casentino, Valdrino and Valdichiana. It is 75km from Florence and 150km from Pisa. The high point of Arezzo dates back to medieval times and this image is not detracted by buildings that are more modern. If you have ever seen the movie ?Life Is Beautiful?, then you have seen the town as it is where the movie was shot.
In Roman times, it was the centerpiece of the Etruscan Federation and, in the Middle Ages, it was one of the first cities to form its own government. It is the birthplace of such famous people as: Michelangelo and the painter and architect, Giorgio Vasari.
The many beautiful buildings there include the church of Santa Maria, in Gradi, that has an unusual statue of the Madonna in terracotta, the Doumo, a 13th, 14th and 15th century Gothic Cathedral and Santa Domenica, a church with an asymmetrical fa?ade. It is also home to a set of frescoes by Piero della Francesca which are artistic treasures. Along with these, it also offers many museums that house sculptures, art and a collection of weaponry. Arezzo is proud of its age-old towers and archaic palazzi.
There is an antique fair which takes place in the Piazza Grande and the Logge Vasari on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month. This fair has been held monthly for the past twenty years and is visited by about twenty thousand people a year. Arezzo also manufactures jewelry and clothing that is distributed to outlets all over the world.
Arezzo is also famous for its food. Aquacotta is a bread soup made with porcini mushrooms and also ribollita, a bread soup made with a variety of vegetables. Of course a visit to Italy wouldn't be complete without Italian varieties of wine.
If you are contemplating a visit, and need a vehicle to pick you up from Florence and Pisa airports, car hire in Arezzo may be a good idea. There are many car hire companies around such as: Avis, Europcar and Hertz, but if you use www.anycarhire.com, they will take all the work out of comparing prices for you, leaving you to just book and go.
