Cefalu is on the northern coast of Sicily in the province of Palermo and is 70km away from the capital with Messina 185km to the west. History of Cefalu

The name Cefalu is of Greek origin and was first mentioned in 396 BC. By the 9th Century the town was conquered by Arabs and renamed Gafludi but a few centuries later the Normans took control. Throughout the middle ages there were a number of feudal families who ruled before it finally became under the rule of Italy in 1861.

Things to See in Cefalu

The cathedral that was begun in the 1100?s has a well preserved exterior and there are also parts of the ancient city still can be viewed. The inside of the cathedral has been renovated and for other religious sites there is the church of St Stefano. By climbing up the staircase to the Salita Saraceno there are wonderful views of the town. It does however take half an hour but the views make it worthwhile. For art lovers there is the Osteria Magno which is a 14th Century mansion that has been altered over the years but is still impressive. It is used for temporary art exhibitions but if you want to view it when there is not an exhibition it is possible to get keys from the tourist office.
