Cognac is built on both banks of the Charente with most on the left bank. It is part of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella. It has a checkered past and it changed several times during the Hundred Years War.
Things to Do in Cognac
As would be imagined there are a number of distilleries to be toured in Cognac and all of them receive good reviews. Remarks are always made about the mould needed to add to the taste. The Otard distillery also has the historical tales of the prisoners who were kept there during the war. There is some lovely countryside to be seen and visitors can spend many hours admiring the views. For a change to the wine and cognac tasting there is a beach at Royan which will be roughly an hour?s drive away.

Cognac is an easy place to drive around as the roads are mainly straight and long with many leading off each other making it simple to get back to the starting point. Jarnac is only eight miles outside of Cognac and here there is a museum containing all the gifts that President Mitterrand was given while he was President. If there is an interest in drinks Bordeaux can be reached by following the E5. To get to the airport you will need to travel to Bordeaux then to exit 6 on the Freeway at Pons and then follow the D732 to Cognac.
