Kissimmee is a city in the U.S state of Florida. It has a population of around 60,000 and was founded in the mid-19th century as Allendale. It was renamed as its current name in 1883 when it finally attained city status and its growth mainly stemmed from Hamilton Disston, who based his large drainage company out of the town.
It was around this time that Kissimmee was expanding and enjoying prosperity as a city. The city’s shipyard was operating at full capacity and the South Florida Railroad expanded to incorporate the city, as Kissimmee City Street Railway. However, the prosperity of the city was short-lived, as the steamships produced by the shipyard were no longer needed, thanks to the expanding railway lines across the country. The economic panic of 1893 was terrible for the U.S economy and hit Kissimmee hard when Hamilton Disston closed his operation in the city, making many people unemployed.
By 1950 Kissimmee only had a population of 5,000, with ranching and cattle raising being the main economic drivers. After the 1971 opening of Walt Disney World Kissimmee benefited from the increase in tourism and development in the region, which supplemented the agricultural side of the economy.
In terms of recreational facilities Kissimmee has the Osceola County baseball stadium and the Osceola County Softball Complex. The former is where the Major League Baseball team, the Houston Astros, conduct their spring training every season. The city also hosts the NCCAA men’s soccer
