New Orleans is the largest city in the U.S state of Louisiana, with a population of over one million. The city was originally founded as La Nouvelle-Orleans in 1718, when a vast part of the now-United States was a French colony. It was named for the Duke of Orleans, who was Regent of France at the time. In 1803 Napoleon sold all of the French territory in North America to the United States in the Louisiana Purchase and after this the city grew with the introduction of many different nationalities.
There are dozens of tourist sights to see in New Orleans, such as the French Quarter of the city and Bourbon Street and its world renowned nightlife. If you like shopping then you can go down Magazine Street and visit all of the famous boutiques that it offers and if you prefer sport then you can go and watch the New Orleans Saints, who play in the city’s Superdome. The weather in New Orleans is usually very humid and hot throughout the year, as you would expect from a city that is in the heart of the U.S sun belt. The summer months bring the most rain, mainly in July and August, with temperatures of 32C despite the precipitation. The city has also been constantly threatened with hurricanes due to its location, with water surrounding three sides of the city. It’s seen to be the most vulnerable U.S city to hurricanes and has been hit with several over the past few years, the most devastating being Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
