Nimes is a city located in the Gard department of the Languedoc-Roussilon region of southern France. The city is the capital of the department and has a population of over 150,000. The language spoken in Nimes is French and the currency is the Euro.
Nimes is steeped in Roman history and you can still see many remains from their time as rulers of Nimes. The biggest and most striking of these is the amphitheatre, which is the best preserved Roman arena in the whole country. The city also boasts a couple of sporting attractions; with Ligue 2 football team Nimes Olympique representing the city. In rugby union the local team is RC Nimes, who play in the Federale 1
National competition.
