Best Car Rental Salamanca Airport

The Salamanca Airport is located west of the city of Salamanca and is part of the Matacan public civilian air station. It was established initially as a military aerodrome in 1936 with the first flights by Iberia occurring in 1937. In 1940 the airport was turned over to the Spanish Air Force with the stipulation that civilian air traffic would also be allowed. A local commercial pilot training school was founded in 1974. Throughout the 1970's the volume of commercial traffic was very low. The airport was primarily being used by the military. During the 1980's and 1990's commercial traffic began to increase. In 2005 a new two-story Terminal building was opened to handle passenger departures and arrivals as well as airport operations.

The pilot training school is now known as Adventia. It trains not only commercial pilots but also offers courses for private pilots and cabin crew. The airport also hosts Inaer Amphibious Aircraft. Inaer offers seaplane services for use by the government as well as commercial and civic services such as firefighting and marine patrol. A third major tenant at the airport is Sensa which provides maintenance facilities.

The Salamanca Airport is not very large having had only 43,000 passengers and 12,000 air operations in 2010. Most of the air traffic is for private and government traffic. Only two airlines have regular service: Air Europa (seasonal) and Air Nostrum. Both are regional carriers ferrying passengers to Barcelona, Ibiza, Menorca, and Palma De Mallorca. Air Nostrum also has flights to Orly airport in Paris, France. There is a departure lounge with two check-in desks which connects to a small boarding area with two boarding gates. The arrival area has a baggage claim and customs area. A small cafeteria and vending machines provide passengers with refreshment. The airport is built to be accessible to those with physical disabilities. There is also a small playground area for children just outside the Terminal .

Getting to the airport can be accomplished by car, bus, or taxi. The airport is located about 15km from Salamanca right off a major highway. There are no cars for hire at the airport. However if you contact tripindicator.com, you can locate a company that offers car hire in Salamanca Airport, and one which will arrange to have a car waiting for you when you arrive. You can also make arrangements through a car hire agency at the airport of your departure.
