St. Malo is the famed walled city jutting out from the Bretton coast in northwest France. It sits at the mouth of the Rance River. During its history it has controlled access to the river as well as the sea beyond. It is the home of the French corsairs who were the privateers extorting fees from ships passing up the river but also along the English Channel. This brought much wealth to the city. St. Malo is also home to the famous explorer and corsair Jacques Cartier. Jacques Cartier is credited with the discovery of Canada.
Though originally a fortified island it is now permanently attached to the mainland. The walled city is the biggest attraction and draws thousands of tourists annually. St. Malo is also known to have one of the highest concentrations of seafood restaurants in all of Europe. St. Malo offers a beautiful stretch of beach to enjoy. It is a major ferry port between France and Great Britain and often marks the beginning or ending point of a holiday between the two countries.
Most tourists are drawn to the walled city. Within the massive ramparts which totally encloses the city there are blocks of granite mansions in which are nestled parks, lanes, and other delights. You will also be treated to a number of cafes, bars and restaurants. And don't forget the shops and the picturesque view of the Rance River and the English Channel. The surrounding countryside also offers much to explore. The famed Mont St. Michel is only 50km to the east. There is also the medieval city of Dinan about 12km south of St. Malo.
