The city of Verona is located in the region of Veneto, in northern Italy. It’s the 2nd most populated city in the region, with only Venice being greater. The city proudly boasts the award of World Heritage Site status by UNESCO, thanks to it’s urban structure and fantastic architecture.
Verona was first founded in 89 BC by the Romans and the city gained importance after this by being the intersection of several roads, of which the Romans were fond of. The city’s history from then on was mostly peaceful, however tragedy struck it in the 17th century when Italy was struck by the plague. This led to an estimated 30,000 people dying in Verona alone.
Verona was later occupied by Napoleon in 1797, thanks to his Italian conquest, however on Easter Monday of that year the populace rose in anger and drove out their French invaders. It was at that time that Napoleon made an end of the Venetian Republic and handed over the territory of Veneto to Austria. Later in the 19th century the city, along with the rest of the Republic became part of Italy.
After the Second World War the city regained its strategic importance due to its closeness to the Iron Curtain. This led to the city being saddled with a strong military presence throughout the Cold War, especially by American troops.
There is some stunning architecture on offer in Verona and none so more than the Basilica of San Zeno Maggiore, which is considered one of the great achievements of Romanesque architecture. It was built in the 12th century and was built with alternating layers of white stone and brick, to give an added visual effect.
The city is represented by a number of high class sporting clubs, with the most prominent being Chievo Verona, who play in the Italian Serie A, as well as Hellas Verona, who currently play in the Serie B. Verona also has a volleyball team and a basketball team.
