Demonstration Warning

Demonstrations are quite common in Peru. These demonstrations often become violent quickly as well. Avoid any areas where disturbances are taking place or likely to take place. Watch the local news and ask advice from locals to get the latest information about possible demonstrations that are occurring or may occur and stay away.

Nazca Lines Warnings

British nationals need to be aware of the risks that are involved if they choose to fly over the Nazca Lines. In October of 2010, a plane crashed at the lines and killed six; four of these people were from the UK. Over the years there have been a number of fatal accidents in this area. Investigations have shown that proper aircraft maintenance and safety standards were not being used. Fake Taxis

When travelling to and from the airport or bus terminal, be careful of taxis. There is a relatively high risk of being robbed by a bogus taxi driver. When choosing to travels by taxi use a reputable company. Call ahead for your taxi and never flag one down on the street.

Driving in Peru

If you choose to use a family car rental in Peru, you should be aware that the driving standard in the country is poor. You can drive for up to six months in Peru using your UK driving licence. You will need to have your passport with you to show how long you have been in the country should you be pulled over. If you are driving in areas where blockades have been set up you will want to seek local advice. Be extremely careful if driving in areas where protests are taking place. It is recommended that you do not travel in a private vehicle outside of the major cities. The conditions are poor and there are numerous accidents resulting in injuries and deaths that occur regularly. Drivers in Peru do not always show care in regard to pedestrians, so make sure to stay alert when walking along the streets as well.

Bus Safety

Bus crashes are quite common in Peru, especially during the night time hours. There have been inter-city bus crashes that resulted in serious injuries and deaths. Only use a reputable travel company when choosing bus transportation. Try to avoid travelling anywhere in the country overnight, especially in remote and mountainous regions. When you are travelling on a bus, it is important to wear your seatbelt all the time.
