Travel Advice to the USA

Hurricane Season

June to November is hurricane season in some parts of the United States. The south of the country can be harshly effected with real issues across these months. It is advised that you check this site before travelling to see if there are any issues.

ESTA Authentication

All Brits travelling to the USA are required to get ESTA authentication before travelling. This is not a Visa, but it is a series of checks to ensure you can travel to the USA. You need to apply for ESTA 72 hours prior to travel to ensure you can legally cross the border into the US. Applications cost $14 and payment can be made via card payment on the site.

If you intend to travel to the US for 90 days plus you will be required to apply for a Visa. It is suggested that you apply for a Visa as soon as you know that you will be travelling to the USA for this length of time.

Those with emergency documentation will not be allowed to enter the USA legally. If you only have emergency documentation, then you will need to apply for a Visa regardless of how long you intend to stay.

Crime Abroad

In built-up city areas, there are those who prey on tourists. With this in mind you should make sure you take into account the following points:

  • Do not veer off into suburbs when driving.
  • Stay vigilant at all times.
  • Never leave items on display if you choose to take advantage of car hire in America.
  • Do not wear expensive items in run down areas.

Law Variation

In the USA, there are three sets of laws, federal, state and local. The latter two differ. Therefore, if you are going to the USA, you should make sure you are aware of the local laws and keep in mind that just because one thing is acceptable in one area it does not mean it is elsewhere in the US.

Health Issues

There are several major health issues around the US at the moment:

Swine Flu – currently in a post pandemic period, Swine Flu has not yet disappeared, but it will no longer cause widespread issues.

Cholera – there have been reported cases of cholera coming from all areas of the US over the past few months. However, enhanced measures have been put in place and this issue currently under control.

Mosquito Bites – over recent years the amount of disease spread by mosquitos has increased; West Nile, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) and Dengue are all diseases that can be caught. Make sure you take the necessary measurements to ensure you are not affected. However, only seek medical advice if you feel unwell after a bite.
