In 1756, Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Secretary General of the Kingdom, created the Alto Douro Vineyard Agriculture Company, thus demarcating the best vineyards in the region, certifying them as suitable for the production of the much appreciated wines abroad, ensuring thus its exceptional quality and protecting our exports, common practice in an enlightened and mercantilist Europe like that of the 17th and 18th centuries.
