Overview

    The Kgaswane Mountain Reserve is set in a mountain range west of the town of Rustenburg. Good, tarred roads make for comfortable travel to and in the reserve.

    Of the over 450 bird species recorded for the Magaliesberg, 320 are in the reserve.

    BirdLife lists the following “Specials”:

    Cape Vulture, Martial Eagle, Black-chested Snake Eagle, Brown Snake Eagle, Cape Vulture, Verreauxs’ Eagle, Cape Eagle Owl, Eurasian Hobby (below), Black Cuckooshrike and Short-toed Rock-Thrush.

    Birds at Kgaswane include:
    Striped Pipit (scarce), Red-winged Francolin (scarce), Coqui Francolin, White-bellied Bustard (scarce), Lazy Cisticola, Cape and Short-toed Rock Thrush, Brubru, Half-collared Kingfisher (scarce), Verreaux’s Eagle, Jackal Buzzard…
    BJ’s abound: Pipits, Larks, Cisticola’s, White-throated Robin-Chat, Alpine Swift, Rock Martin, Fairy Flycatcher (winter), Greater Double-collared Sunbird, Black-Cuckoo Shrike, Woodpeckers, Eastern Long-billed Lark (scarce), Cape Bunting, Cape Grassbird.
