Duration

clock5 to 13 days

Overview

Monlam (Great Prayer) Festival is one of the best times to experience the real and authentic Tibetan with their distinctive culture and people.  It is celebrated at the most monasteries in Tibetan regions during the Tibetan New Year, which is exactly the same time as the Chinese New Year (Lunar Calendar) in Amdo Tibetan area.  At Labrang Monastery, normally lasting for 15 days or so, monks chant sutras with their throaty sound at the main prayer hall every morning and afternoon. Meanwhile, the Tibetans give their offerings and pray for their coming future and well-being.  A special food called Tsotu (made in butter, rice, meat and salt and sugar) is made to make offering for monasteries, who gives various performances to pray for the good of all the people in the new year.
