Day 3: Historical Tour of Portobelo the Gold Route
Stop At: Portobelo, Portobelo, Colon Province 08:00 a.m. Hotel lobby to start our tour that crosses the Isthmus of Panama, throughout the Canal basin, where you will observe the fauna, flora and the large ships that transit this route until you reach Portobelo. This city was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his fourth voyage on November 2, 1502, it was not until 1597 that the city was founded by Francisco Velarde to replace the city of Nombre de Dios, it was one of the most important ports for the export of silver from New Granada. The gold from Peru was transported by mule through the crossroads between Panama City and Portobelo. We will visit the Fort of Santiago, San Jerónimo, the Church of San Juan de Dios and San Felipe, seat of the Black Christ of Portobelo, the Customs House, one of the most important buildings of the time. Finishing our tour we will enjoy an Afro-Antillean lunch that is part of their culture.
