Overview

The historic town of Essaouira, formerly known as Mogador (deriving from the Phoenician word Migdol meaning a "small fortress"), is an exemplar of a fortified town built during the mid-eighteenth century. Its walls were inspired by the Vauban model and its construction follows contemporary European military architecture in a North African setting, while still adhering to Arabo-Muslim architectural and urban planning principles. Over time, it has played an important role as an international trading port, connecting Morocco and sub-Saharan Africa with Europe and other parts of the world. The town also serves as a testament to multiculturalism; since its inception, various ethnicities such as Amazighs, Arabs, Africans and Europeans have coexisted peacefully alongside multiple religions including Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Linked inseparably to the Medina are numerous cultural and natural sites found in the Mogador archipelago.

Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product:

Stop At: Essaouira Ramparts, Rue Skala, Essaouira Morocco

Departure at 7h:20 am from your hotel. We will take the main road to travel 170 km to Essaouira and make some enjoyable stops along the way:

After 60 km, we'll pause for a nice panoramic view.

Second stop to observe "flying goats" and learn about the Argan tree.

We will then take time out in a Berber village for refreshments and coffee.

Visiting an Argan Oil production factory is also included in our schedule.

The programme includes exploration of the medina (old city), Scala (great sea bastion), fishing port, Jewish quarter where you can find lots of character and tranquillity. After lunch there's free time to admire the beauty of the city...

The return journey will be around 16h by following our original route back. Arrival is scheduled at 19h00.
