The rocky desert of Agafay lies just a 3-hour drive from Casablanca and only 40 minutes from Marrakech. Although it does not offer the same golden, rolling sand dunes as the pre-Saharan steppe regions of Erg Chebbi and Erg Chigaga, these rocky dunes still exhibit the same feeling of remoteness – they are a good alternative to travellers who do not want to make the long drive to nomad desert camps around the area of Merzouga in the south of Morocco but would still like the experience of camel trekking and spending the night in a nomad camp under the stars. The area around Agafay is one of exquisite beauty – the trip begins in one of Morocco’s urban centres and moves into the remote landscape of the Atlas Mountains.
