Bateshwar Temples near Agra

Duration

clock7 hours

Overview

In my previous life I must have been a Chambal native, probably even a daku (dacoit / bandit) - This is what my friends jokingly compare me to knowing my passion for all things Chambal (the region aruound the Chambal River) - its natural and built heritage, people, food, it's not so glorious past but jaw dropping present. During this tour we will be visiting three Hindus temples (6th to 10th century) within 2 hour driving distance from Agra. I have named them 'The Bateshwara Temple Circuit' which comprises of Bateshwara Temples (ruins like Angkor Wat in Cambodia), Garh Padhavali (carvings) and Mitawali (inspired the design of the Parliament House in Delhi). The temples are devoid of mass tourism. The area had a bad reputation for bandits but they are long gone leaving behind these beautiful temples not on the tourist map or in most guidebooks. Traveling here with local support is crucial as the area is remote and sometimes tricky. For many this is the highlight of their India trip.
