Berlin and its architecture: "Reading" the city with an historian

Duration

clock150 to 180 minutes

Overview

Surely, Berlin is not known for being a beautiful city in traditional terms, but certainly one of the most exciting places in Europe. The German capital offers more traces of different political systems than anywhere else on the continent. Some places even show different eras overlapping: Imperial Germany and Weimar Republic, National Socialism and Communism, Middle Ages and present-day.
As an experienced guide, graduated historian and book author (including: "Architectural History of Berlin") I will show you how to "read" all these traces and decipher the meaning of the various buildings. During the tour, I will tell you about the city's development and share the results of my research with you (and also some personal stories about life in Berlin since the early 1990s...). You will learn why parts of the Berlin Palace exist in various places, discover what the „architectural espionage“ of the 18th century is all about, and what the first building of the Cold War has to do with the architectural projects of the Nazis.
