The charming town of Castlewellan lies beneath the stunning Mourne Mountains and is home to the beautiful Castlewellan Forest Park. Playing host to one of the most outstanding tree and shrub collections in Europe, the Forest Park features landscaped gardens, an 18th century arboretum, various walking trails, a mile-long lake and an imposing Victorian castle.
Without doubt the park’s star attraction is the Peace Maze, one of the world’s largest permanent hedge mazes. Designed to represent the path to a peaceful future for Northern Ireland, visitors can walk in the shadows of the mountains attempting to find their way out and be the first to “ring the bell”
Nearby Leitrim is a small town with a big history. Highlights of this friendly town include the Drumena Cashel, one of the best examples of walled settlements that were used in the early Christian era that is 5th-11th century. For history and archaeology enthusiasts this site overlooking Lough Reavy is definitely worth a visit.
