Caves of Castelcivita

Duration

clock2 to 4 hours

Overview

The spectacle of nature in a dream scenario.
A stone's throw from Paestum and immersed in the greenery of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, the Castelcivita Caves are part of an artistic and naturalistic path of extraordinary importance, designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
Its main branch, characterized by spectacular and imposing limestone formations, is divided into three routes: a tourist route (1200 m) open all year round, an off-path path called amateur caving (3000 m) accessible from May to October, and a final section dedicated only to professional cavers.
The main feature of the Caves is the spectacle of the myriad of colors that the rock has assumed over the centuries by the sediments of different minerals transported by water.
Today the Caves of Castelcivita constitute one of the most important testimonies for the reconstruction of the arrival of Homo sapiens in Europe.
