From Krakow to Wieliczka Salt Mine - Guided Regular Tour

Duration

clock4 hours 30 minutes

Overview

Salt has been mined in Wieliczka since around 3000 BC. At that time, natural sources of salt water were discovered, but they dried up between the 12th and 13th centuries. Local people then began building a well, discovering rock salt inadvertently. The Wieliczka Salt Mine, which we can visit today, consists of 9 levels. The last one is at 1072 feet below ground level. However, tourists can only reach a depth of 442 feet. What distinguishes the Wieliczka Salt Mine is its very special and characteristic microclimate, which is characterized by the fact that the underground air has a high concentration of calcium chloride sodium and magnesium ions. The high concentration of salt or other minerals in the air has a very good effect on the upper respiratory tract so that many people visit this place for medicinal purposes. At a depth of 442 feet, a health center was built for people with various respiratory diseases such as asthma and various allergies.
