Overview

Capital of the northern Basque Country, Bayonne is a city where the centuries overlap. 2,000 years of history are gathered within its walls. Commercial port and fortified military city, constrained by a succession of ramparts, Bayonne has always been a strategic city. Positioned at the outlet of a huge hinterland, at the confluence of the Nive and the Adour rivers, and not far from Spain, Bayonne has for centuries been a major commercial hub thanks to its river activity.

The three main districts, Grand Bayonne, Petit Bayonne and the Saint-Esprit district look at each other, separated by the river and the river. The astonishing facades of the buildings are reminiscent of the constraints that the city had to undergo in order to grow, but they certainly guarantee that walkers will fall in love with the place.
To visit Bayonne is also to discover its beautiful cathedral which overlooks the city.

A guided tour accessible to all, free for children under 12.
