Herculaneum Ancient City (Tour + Transfer)

Duration

clock4 hours

Overview

Herculaneum was buried by twenty-three meters of volcanic deposits after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was the Bourbons who brought it back to light, thanks to a casual discovery made in correspondence with the ancient theater of Herculaneum. The excavations offer the visitor the opportunity to observe the urban fabric, the distribution of the houses, the magnificent spa complex, the sumptuous gymnasium and the monumental basilica.

The perfect state of conservation of the woods, the bronze parts and the façade of the houses gives a complete picture of both the various styles of Vesuvian painting and the residential building that evokes the previous daily life.

Among the most important archaeological remains of the city: the Collegio degli Augustali, the Baths, the House of Neptune, and Anfitrite, the Casa Sannitica and the beach where more than 300 people died in search of salvation.
