Overview
The city of Herculaneum is attributed to the mythical Greek god Hercules, as stated by Dionysius of Halicarnassus, with a founding date in 1243 BC. Nevertheless, research conducted indicates that it was probably founded by either the Oscans or Etruscans in the 7th century BC and taken over by the Samnites in the 5th century BC.

Visiting The Ruins of Herculaneum
Rather than Pompeii, it's possible to explore all of Herculean in just a few hours. This archaeological park is the perfect stop for those with limited time who want to experience the thrill of walking in the footsteps of Ancient Romans!
Herculaneum has been kept intact like no other spot on Earth; not even nearby Pompeii. The city was buried beneath 16 meters of ash and mud during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, and this layer shielded two-story domus homes with internal architecture and décor still visible - including features made from wood and marble, decorations jewelry, as well as organic material like food - providing an unparalleled insight into daily life during that period.
