    Overview

A journey back in time to the opulent Herculaneum, the gem of the Tyrrhenian Sea, destroyed by Vesuvius' eruption in 79 AD. Unlike Pompeii, which was a commercial hub, Herculaneum was a resort for Roman aristocracy living along the coastline of Campania. As opposed to Pompeii where ash buried it under meters of volcanic material, Herculaneum was covered with liquid pyroclastic matter that hardened and created an even thicker layer of 20 or more meters of volcanic rock when cooled. The high temperatures from the scorching clouds that engulfed it charred organic materials, resulting in wooden beams from structures, stairs, furniture and ropes still visible since its initial excavation in 1738.
Today only a small fraction of this city can be explored while the remaining 80% still lies beneath its solidified lava blanket. Yet what is accessible gives us a clear view into the admirable lifestyle enjoyed by its inhabitants.
