Hiking - Grazalema Natural Park - 12km - Easy Level

Duration

clock4 hours

Overview

This walk takes us cross country between two white villages, exploring the varied terrain and landscape of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park.

We begin in Grazalema, formerly one of the wealthiest, and thus grandest, of the rural white villages. It is beautifully well-kept and is one of the few which still holds an annual bull running festival. We exit the village via the old mediaeval cobblestone pathway, then head into the heart of the Grazalema Natural Park. This is an area of rocky mountain crags, karst valleys, and cork oak forest. We walk along mountain pathways and old drovers’ routes, through holm oak forests and along a river valley, enjoying a succession of beautiful views all the way. We finish in Montejaque, an old Berber village, set high in a rocky niche. Stop for optional refreshments in Montejaque and visit the mirador “viewpoint” at the top of the village, reputedly the site of an Arab fort…though nothing remains of it. Return to Ronda in our minibus.
