Jewish Vienna: Diversity Walking Tour (1. District)

Duration

clock120 to 150 minutes

Overview

Embark on a historical city walk where the past is often mirrored by the present and the future. Start off at the Seitenstettengasse, one of today's hotspots of Jewish Vienna. Here is the current location of the Wiener Stadttempel, which is considered to be the main synagogue of Vienna, due to its longstanding and distinct history. It played a decisive role during World War II, as it was the only synagogue in Vienna to survive the Novemberpogrom of 1938.

Walking over towards Morzinplatz, enjoy a great view onto the second district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt, which in many ways is an anchor in the Jewish history of the city. Among other things, this is where the Ghetto was located in “Unterem Werd." After the tragedy of the Shoah and its consequences, Jewish life once again flourishes in this part of the city. While continuing the stroll in the old city, walk by the Hohe Markt and hear more about famous Jewish families like the Arnsteins, Rothschilds, Ephrussies, and many more.
