    What To Expect

Pass By: Manshiyat Naser, Cairo Egypt

Manshiyat Nasser, known more widely as Garbage City, is an urban slum with around 60,000 residents located on the outskirts of Moqattam Hills in Cairo's metropolitan territory. This area has become famous for its widespread piles of trash due to the lack of a functioning waste collection system in the city which has a population of approximately 20 million.

The Zabbaleen ("Garbage people"), comprised mostly of Coptic Christians, have been providing an essential service for 70 years by collecting and transporting garbage door-to-door from Cairo’s households and businesses. Upon returning to their homes in Manshiyat Naser, they sort through the rubbish to find recyclable materials. The men are typically responsible for collecting while women and children sort through it.
