Lonely Planet Experiences: Private Civil Rights Tour of Atlanta

Duration

clock3 hours

Overview

The Civil Rights movement's spiritual home is in Atlanta and in the Sweet Auburn district Martin Luther King Jr's influence can still be seen today; this is where he had 'his dream' during a speech that has had a powerful impact on US race relations.

Racial inequality, segregation and discrimination was once state law and a policy firmly upheld in Atlanta and most areas in the south. Atlanta, however, always had a more forward-thinking approach even before the Civil Rights movement and in 1959 it desegregated public transport and had already appointed black officials.

From 1940-1970 Atlanta emerged as the centre for activism and led the way in calling for black civil liberties including voting rights and educational and economic opportunities
