Mining and railway tour in the Andes

Duration

clock9 hours

Overview

The place we will visit is called the "Cajon del Maipo" and constitutes a narrow and in some parts deep valley nestled in the Andes Mountains. The route that we will travel covers about 80 km, with destination to the town of El Volcán, a town of mining origin, which is about 1,400 meters above sea level, in whose vicinity we will visit the “Las Merceditas Mine”, a vestige of the mining boom of that area, until the middle of the 20th century. Former miners will accompany us on a journey of more than 600 meters inside the Andes mountain range.
On the way back we will stop at the town of El Melocotón, in particular at the old railway station and we will learn from the mouth of an old railway the history of the Cajón military railway, of great importance for much of the twentieth century.
We finish this route, already back, again in San José de Maipo, where we will visit the town and its history before returning to Santiago.
