Traveling north into Washington State from Portland, you'll add a layer of clothing and descend into Ape Cave for an hour-long cave walkabout. Later, walk along the blast-swept Eruption Trail with panoramic views of the devastation and the mountain’s crater. In summer, the recovering landscape teems with purple lupine and other wildflowers – you might even glimpse a distant herd of Roosevelt elk! You’ll have time to explore the Johnston Ridge Observatory Visitor Center.
