Overview

    Dating back to a period as long ago as the 1st century BCE to the 11th century CE, the Kanheri caves are located on the scenic island of Salsette, on
    the outskirts of Mumbai. They exhibit a range of Buddhist sculptures, carvings,paintings, etc. This set of 109 caves is carved out of rock and gain their name from the term ‘black mountain’ in Sanskrit.  

    They overlook the hillside. Most of these hills are covered with gigantic trees and offer a breathtaking view of fresh greenery. The rock-cut steps pave the path to these massive caves. One can easily draw a contrast between the oldest ones of them and the ones built comparatively later. The rain water conservation is the source of water for these caves.  

    These caves came into the spotlight post the Buddhist settlements by the 3rd century CE. Ever since they have been an important part of the Buddhist influence in the Konkan region. The Kanheri caves were utilized by the Buddhists for living, studying and also most importantly meditating. One can spot the Buddhist styles in sculptures, on the designs of pillars and also the stupas which significantly signify Buddhism.  

    They are also prominent for connecting different trade centers to one another. By the time the caves were ruled by the Mauryans and Kushans, it had evolved into a University center. Each cave holds an individual uniqueness and is famous for its own significance. While some were utilized as the Buddhist learning centers, the others were rest places for travelers. The entire journey comprises of detailed information about the caves especially the major ones in detail. The tour will roughly be spread around a period of 5 hours ending with drop back at the hotel.
