Stop At: Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, Piazza Museo Nazionale 19, 80135, Naples Italy

The National Archaeological Museum of Naples (Italian: Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli, sometimes shortened to MANN) is an important Italian archaeological museum which mainly exhibits ancient Roman remains. Its collection includes works from Greek, Roman and Renaissance times with particular emphasis on Roman artifacts from nearby Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum. It was formerly known as the Real Museo Borbonico ("Royal Bourbon Museum").

Pompeii is an archeological site near Naples in southern Italy where the ruins of an old Roman town destroyed by Mount Vesuvius' eruption in 79 AD can be found.

    History of Pompeii

Established in the 8th century BC, by the 1st century AD Pompeii had become a wealthy port city and holiday resort much favoured by affluent Roman citizens; researchers estimate its population to have been between 10 000 and 20 000 people at the time.

Stop At: Pompeii Archaeological Park, Porta Marina (via Villa dei Misteri), 80045 Pompeii Italy

The ruins at Pompeii were first discovered late in the 16th century by architect Domenico Fontana. Herculaneum was discovered in 1709 followed by systematic excavation there beginning 1738. Actual work at excavating Pompeii did not start until 1748 and it wasn't until 1763 that an inscription ("Rei publicae Pompeianorum") was found identifying it as such. This work done during mid-18th century marks the commencement of modern archaeology.
