100km north of Izmir lies the city of Pergamum which was called by Roman historian Pliny as “By far the most famous city in all Asia”. It had been a capital city for four hundred years and has been home to several cultures since prehistoric times. Several temples, palaces and agoras are located here including Zeus Altar and Parchment Library which is known to house an impressive collection of books written on processed goat or lamb skin – a process that originated from Pergamum itself when Egypt imposed an embargo on exporting papyrus sheets.
