Pompeii, Italian Pompei, is a preserved ancient Roman city in Campania, Italy situated 14 miles (23 km) southeast of Naples at the southeastern base of Mount Vesuvius. On August 24th 79 CE, an immense eruption from Mount Vesuvius spread volcanic debris over the city and the next day clouds of extremely hot gases engulfed it. Buildings were demolished and citizens killed or suffocated by ash and pumice. It would be possible to organize a two hour private tour guide with an additional fee of 120euros to be paid in cash directly to the guide.
