Duration

clock8 to 9 hours

Overview

Sprawling eastward towards the foothills of the Magaliesberg Mountains, straddling the Apies River, Pretoria (ePitoli in Zulu, Tshwane in Tswana) is rich in history, iconic monuments, magnificent towers and large amphitheaters.

Our first stop is the massive granite structure of the Voortrekker Monument. Situated prominently on a hilltop, it commemorates the Voortrekkers – explorers who left the Cape Colony in search of new opportunity between 1835 and 1854.

Next, we visit Paul Kruger Museum, which is the historical residence of Boer leader and South African president Paul Kruger. We find the historical city centre at Church Square, where the first church was built in 1855 before our final stop at the Union Buildings. The imposing building that houses the official seat of government was designed by renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker.
