What to Expect

    Itinerary

    Day 1: Exploring Lalibela and attending night prayers for Christmas Eve

    Stop At: Lalibela - Rock-Hewn Churches, Lalibela Ethiopia
    In the morning around 7:30 we pick you from your hotel in Addis Ababa and bring you to the airport, from where we depart to Lalibela. After arriving to Lalibela town, we explore the main church complex of Lalibela together with a local guide. The main church complex consists of 11 rock-hewn churches, which are connected with each other by a complex tunnel system. This afternoon we visit the following churches: Bete Amanuel, Bete Markorios, Bete Aba Libanos and Bete Gebriel Rufael. Afterwards we take rest for the long evening ahead.

    Stop At: Bete Maryam, 22MV+C9R, Lalibela, Ethiopia
    The evening we attend the Christmas Eve ceremony together with the pilgrims at Bete Mariam. We listen to the drums and prayers. At midnight, a candle lighting ceremony is performed to remember the birth of Christ.

    Day 2: Celebrating Gena

    Stop At: Lalibela, Lalibela, Amhara Region
    In the morning we get up early to see the two-hour long sunrise procession, in which about 100 priests from a line and climb the rocky steps. Once they arrive at the rim of the pit overlooking the churches, they follow the beat of the drum and surround the edge. They rattle their sistrums and move to simulate King David's dance. In the courtyard below, other priests from a circle with two drummers in the center and chant a hymn to the priests standing on the top, who respond in return. This ceremony is symbolising the people on earth and the angels above, joining voices in unity. This continues for two hours with increasing intensity. After the cermony we return to the hotel, take some food and rest and explore the city of Lalibela in the afternoon.

    Day 3: Exploring churches in Lalibela area

    Stop At: Genete Mariam Rock Church, Debre Sina Kebele near to Asheton Hotel, Lalibela Ethiopia
    On this day we take a full-day excursion to Genete Mariam, one of the most interesting churches in the Lalibela area near the source of Takaze river. The church contains some of the earliest discovered wall paintings in Etiopia.

    Day 4: Flight back to Addis Ababa

    Stop At: Addis Ababa, Addis Ababa
    In the morning we depart to Lalibela airport and fly back to Addis Ababa. After arriving back to the capital, we will bring you from the aiport to your hotel.
