Overview

    Kolomenskoye is one of the oldest inhabited places of modern Moscow territories. Archeological monuments that dot the locale show that Stone Age people lived here.

    In XVI a ceremonial grand-ducal residence was formed here and by the time of Mikhail Fedorovich’s rule Kolomenskoye became favorite summer residence of the ruling dynasty.

    The next step in history of residence in Kolomenskoye is its transformation into a kind-of “outside-Moscow Kremlin” because of activities of tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, and after his death the importance of Kolomenskoye residence gradually decreased.

    Peter I rarely visited his father’s favourite manor. On May 14, 1724, the Feast of the Ascension, Emperor Peter I visited Kolomenskoye for the last time.

    Second half of the 19th century - the time of extinction of court life in Kolomenskoye. In 1913-1916. the first restoration works of the monuments of Kolomenskoye began, a museum was organized here in 1923.
