Tour Details

    Overview

It is home to the Fontanelle Cemetery, a gem of the city carved out of a tufa cave situated just outside the walls of its Greco-Roman predecessor.

This particular burial site was used in 1656 during an epidemic and continued to be utilized during other plagues occurring in subsequent centuries. The bones housed here became popular amongst Neapolitans who partook in the "pezzentelle souls" ritual; this involved adopting a skull and caring for it with hopes that its story would be revealed through graces or intercessions in a dream.

The knowledgeable guide will explain why this place holds such significance to locals as well as uncovering any legends linked to some of the skulls preserved here. Additionally, visitors may explore nearby baroque churches and buildings throughout the Sanità district.
