Cobblestoned and packed with souvenir stalls, cafes and art galleries, ST.ANDREWS DESCENT is compared to Parisian MONTMARTRE. Winding down a 87m hill, it serves as a shortcut from the Upper to the Lower City (Podil).
The street boasts one of the world's best observation decks that offers a panoramic view of the Lower City – the view ranked by the Guardian as one of the 10 best city views on the Planet Earth. Dominating the street is the 18th century St.Andrew's Church inscribed in the list of 1000 Wonders of the Planet Earth (compiled in Germany). The street is flanked with the 19th and early 20th cent. mansions, most of which are architectural monuments.
Very much like MONTMARTRE, in the early 20th cent. the street was home and a hangout for painters and sculptors. The tour includes climbing the stairs leading to Khorevytsia Mound (walking shoes advised) to get a feel where Kyiv began to exist in the 5th cent. and enjoy an aerial view of nouveaux riches' Vozdvizhenka housing estate.
