The ancient Ercolano has yet to be fully uncovered, being encased in a hot “cloud” whose temperature exceeded 100°. This cloud turned into a mud-like substance that was able to protect items from burning while not destroying them.

For instance, the 'Villa dei Papiri' is an example of such protection: its library contained charred books which were able to be unrolled and read thanks to a recovery technique, granting us invaluable knowledge about the era.
