Overview

Village Museum, one of Europe’s first open-air ethnographic museums, is definitely not to be missed when in Bucharest. Extended on the 15 hectares next to the Herastrau Lake, the Village Museum allows you to experience Romanian peasant life without going outside vibrant Bucharest.

Currently, the museum displays over 300 hundred buildings including houses, farmsteads, windmills, watermills and churches from all of Romania's historic regions: Transylvania, Oltenia, Dobrogea and Moldavia.
Majority of the houses date back to the 19th century, though some of them date back to as early as the 17th century too. Most of the structures are authentic: they were purchased from the peasants, dismantled and then transported to Bucharest.
