If we classify Indian Classical Music into broad categories there are two main ones, Carnatic Music and Hindustani Music. Carnatic Music has a monophonic song with improvised variations and is the music of Southern India. Whereas, Hindustani Music is the music of Northern India and is based on the raga system. Sa, re, ga, ma pa, dha, and ni are the basic seven notes. In all these seven, sa and pa are constant whereas all others can be major or minor tone, leading to innumerable combinations.
