    Overview

    The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a subterranean Roman Catholic Church built inside the tunnels of a salt mine situated 200 meters below sea level in a mountain close to the town of Zipaquirá. It is an exceedingly well-known destination in the region. The title 'Salt Cathedral' was given mainly for drawing tourists to it. This actively working church receives up to 3,000 visitors on Sundays. As it does not have any bishop, it does not hold official status as a cathedral within Catholicism.

    The Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a renowned and celebrated structure in Colombia, having earned its title as the First Wonder of the country due to its unique architecture found within an ancient salt mine. This attraction allows visitors to make a spiritual connection with nature while 180 meters underground. You will be astounded by the majestic work that this site has to offer – making it an unforgettable experience inside a mountain of salt.

    This location can easily be reached from Bogotá in just 45 minutes by taxi.

    Upon purchasing your admission ticket you will have access to the Salt Theme Park, enjoy a light show, watch a 3-D movie named Nucuma and participate in guided tours around the cathedral.

    The Plaza del Minero is an expansive semicircle with 50 radius featuring 40 Palmas de Cera (wax palm trees) which symbolize the years that Old Cathedral was open for public use. These Wax Palms Trees are known nationwide as the National Tree of Colombia.

    From Plaza del Minero you can admire two incredible works; one carved into stone showcasing indigenous people mining and another made out of steel titled Monumento al Minero created by master Alfredo Arújo Santoyo. This plaza leads up to the entrance tunnel of our beloved First Wonder of Colombia – Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá.
