Split is the second largest city in Croatia and is the largest city on the Adriatic coast. The Diocletian palace in Split is an UNESCO-protected world heritage monument. It was built as a villa for the abdicated Roman emperor 17 centuries ago, and developed into what is now the historic core of the city of Split.
