It was established prior to Islam's appearance, although its golden era came during the Saadian Dynasty in the 16th century, when it was christened 'Mohamédia'. To this day, 8km of earthen walls remain as a proud reminder of past conflicts. Stepping through one of its five grand city gates and into the medina is like travelling back in time.

The seemingly chaotic maze of streets and alleyways was calculatedly constructed according to a strict hierarchical plan. The mosque stands at its centre and is enveloped by the souk - home to expert artisans whose trades are organised according to their worth.
